Tragedy of Liverpool mum who died penniless after her benefits stopped

Benefit tales

A mum-of-one suffering from severe mental illness died without any money after her disability benefits dried up.

Annette Francis, 30, was found dead at her Garston home two weeks ago, leaving behind 11-year-old son  Kieron. Her distraught family say Annette  was let down by the authorities in the  months leading up to her death.

At the time of the tragedy, Annette had spent six months without receiving a single penny in benefits, her aunt Ann Sorotos claims.

She told the ECHO: “Annette was penniless because she had  no money coming in from the benefits people. I’m disgusted with them and  think Annette was really badly let  down.”

Annette suffered from a mental  illness similar to bipolar disorder  and was unable to hold down a job.

SNP hold on to a lead big enough to keep nearly all their seats and Scottish Tories go back where they belong – third place, no prize according to latest poll.

Talking-up Scotland

msSDOkBh_400x400

I’ve taken this data from the excellenthttp://scotgoespop.blogspot.co.uk. You might wonder why I don’t just share it but I want to make a slightly different view of what it means. Like Scot goes Pops’ sharp-as-a-tack James Kelly, I recognise it might be a rogue poll we’re about to look at but I’m more optimistic or naïve than him. We’ll soon find out.

Here’s what the Survation online poll on the 3rd June has for the UK:

Conservatives 40% (-6)
Labour 39% (+5)
Liberal Democrats 8% (n/c)
UKIP 5% (+2)
Wouldn’t that be luverly?

It’s different from the other pollsters but as I’ve already pointed out their methods are often too Tory-friendly. See:

Despite methodology biased against shy, young and less-well-off, Ipsos MORI / STV poll shows ‘Yes’ vote holding up again

After the surprise Tory win in 2015, they’ve been compensating for ‘shyness’ and supposed higher turnout amongst Tories. They’ve…

Abbie and her late father, James Harrison.

Julia Savage is a manager at Birkenhead Benefit Centre in Liverpool. She wrote a letter addressed to a GP regarding a seriously ill patient. It said:

“We have decided your patient is capable of work from and including January 10, 2016.

“This means you do not have to give your patient more medical certificates for employment and support allowance purposes unless they appeal against this decision.

“You may need to again if their condition worsens significantly, or they have a new medical condition.”

The patient, James Harrison, had been declared “fit for work” and the letter stated that he should not get further medical certificates.

However, 10 months after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) contacted his doctor without telling him, James died, aged 55,the Daily Record has reported.

He was clearly not fit for work.

His grieving daughter, Abbie, said:

Crip The Vote UK #CripTheVoteUK

Same Difference

Same Difference fully supports this campaign. We publish this press release with more pleasure than most.

Disabled campaigners are launching a UK branch of international group @CripTheVote ( @CripTheVoteUK ) to put urgent disability issues on the UK General Election 2017 agenda.

CripTheVoteUK is asking supporters to join in online starting 4th May 2017 and be part of the campaign by sharing hashtag #CripTheVoteUK. We are also asking people to share photos with a commitment to “spend 10 minutes to save 10,000 lives” by using their vote this 8 June.

“Right now, disabled people are quite literally voting for our lives,” said Dennis Queen, a campaigner in CTVUK’s network . “We need ALL voters to know this is an emergency for thousands of disabled people and help us fight back.”, she added.

CripTheVoteUK is asking all voters to think about how their vote affects us. We are encouraging disabled people, our…
